Villeneuve-de-Berg [vilnœv də bɛʁ] is a French town, situated in the département of Ardèche in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, approximately 15 kilometres to the east of Aubenas and 25 kilometres to the west of Montélimar. It has around 3,000 inhabitants known as the Villeneuvois.
A little history
The founding of the royal bastide of Villeneuve-de-Berg resulted from a paréage agreement, concluded in 1284 between King Philippe III le Hardi and Foulques, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Mazan, in the Vivarais mountains. It is one of the four bastides of the sénéchaussée de Beaucaire, along with Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, established on a fortified village of the monastery of Saint-André (1226), Aigues-Mortes (1240), and Boucieu-le-Roi, in the Haut-Vivarais (1292). Of these four foundations, only Villeneuve-de-Berg has its origins in a paréage agreement between the king and a Cistercian abbey.
