A little history
Originating from an ancient Villonisa, the town of Villenauxe, which became Villenauxe-la-Grande upon its merger with the neighbouring town of Dival, developed from the 16th century onwards, when François Ier authorised the town to fortify itself in 1537. It had four gates, Saint-Jean, Saint-Martin, de Provins and du faubourg de Nesle. It served as a refuge for the monks of the abbaye de Nesle-la-Reposte in their house in the rue du Perey. It was transferred there from 1674 and they installed their Romanesque portal, which had come from Nesle, along with stables, a bakery, storerooms, a vat house and a press. A seigneurial house is known as the Maison de l'Epée.
