During prehistory, the territory was inhabited by the Celts or Gauls before they were pushed back by the invaders known as the Belges. The emperor Aurélien, who was then in Gaul and who persecuted Christians, alarmed by his idolatry, had him imprisoned. Savinien managed to escape by following the Seine and sought refuge at Rilly.
