Vigneux-sur-Seine (pronounced [viɲø syʁ sɛn]) is a French commune in the département of l'Essonne, in the Île-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Vigneusiens. Situated on the former bed of the Seine, occupied since the Neolithic period by humans, the commune remained until the 19th century an agricultural village, first dependent on the chapters of Paris then on wealthy landowners, dotted with châteaux from the 14th century onwards.
A little history
The presence of a menhir, called Pierre à Mousseau, and the discovery of knapped flint tools attests to human presence on the territory of the commune since the Neolithic period. Cups and dish bases from the Iron Age authenticate the persistence of occupation, as do the ruins of walls, tools and vases dating from the early Christian era. From the 6th century, the land of Vigneux was dependent on the chapter of Notre-Dame de Paris. From the 12th century, it was the abbaye Saint-Victor de Paris that owned it until the French Revolution.
