Vif is a French commune situated in the département of Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Situated on the eastern foothills of the massif du Vercors, 16 km south of Grenoble, the commune has been attached since 2004 to the communauté d'agglomération Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, which became a métropole in 2015, at the same time as the communes of Le Gua, Saint-Paul-de-Varces and Varces-Allières-et-Risset. The principal town of the unité urbaine de Vif (of which Le Gua is the suburb) and former chef-lieu of the canton de Vif until 2015, the town is now attached to the canton du Pont-de-Claix, whose centralising office has been located at Le Pont-de-Claix since the new territorial reorganisation.
A little history
The history of Vif, although marked by poorly understood periods of obscurity, covers nearly 8,000 years, from prehistory (Neolithic) to the present day. The commune has a rich and chronologically complete history and has seemingly never experienced a hiatus. Few communes can pride themselves on such historical continuity. The rocher de Saint Loup, on the montagne d'Uriol, has a settlement dating from the middle Neolithic period (5th millennium BC).
