Veynes, the town
Veynes covers 42.6 km², lies between 771 and 1,815 m above sea level and had 3,214 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Veynes (Vèino or Vèina in Vivaro-Alpine Provençal) is a French commune situated in the département of Hautes-Alpes, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its inhabitants are called the Veynois.
A little history
The communal territory has been the subject of human occupation since the middle Neolithic period, approximately 4,000 years before our era. In 2024, during a preventive archaeology project ahead of a property development on the Saint-Marcellin-le-Plat site, a collection of monolithic steles and tumuli were uncovered, accompanied by small artefacts attributed to the Chasséen culture and traces of engraving and painting. The site as a whole indicates a ritual site or a necropolis, as evidenced by residues of human cremation. Laboratory analyses will be needed to determine this and the collected artefacts will then be entrusted to the departmental museum in Gap.
