Vars (pronounced in French, [vaʁs]) is a French commune situated in the département of Hautes-Alpes, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It is known as a winter sports resort. Its inhabitants are called les Varsincs.
A little history
Saint-Marcellin is the oldest village in the commune. The commune then expanded towards Sainte-Marie and Sainte-Catherine. It was from this first hamlet that the first mechanical lifts were built in the 20th century and the first hotels were created, most of them in former chalets. Finally, from 1962, Les Claux was built around sporting activities and principally alpine skiing.
