Vernoux-en-Vivarais is a French commune situated in the Ardèche département, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The commune is a member of the parc naturel régional des Monts d'Ardèche, it is attached to the canton de Rhône-Eyrieux and its inhabitants are known as the Vernousains.
A little history
It was a monastic foundation established by the abbaye de Cruas. The village ramparts were razed in 1567, during the Wars of Religion. In the night of 11 to 12 December 1745, 42 Protestant inhabitants were killed and 400 wounded by troops and Catholic burghers, following the arrest of the local pastor, Mathieu Majal known as Désubas, and 4 of his faithful parishioners. It was formerly a barony of the Chalencon, bought in part by the lords of la Tourette who sat in the États du Languedoc.
