Vergt [vɛʁ] is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Chef-lieu of the canton de Vergt from 1790 to 2015, the commune became at that date the bureau centralisateur of the canton du Périgord central.
A little history
On 9 October 1562 the bataille de Vergt took place, between Catholics and Protestants, in the context of the first war of religion. Blaise de Monluc, a Catholic captain, defeated Symphorien de Duras and Guy de Montferrand, seigneur de Langoiran. The commune was created in 1790, and its name fluctuated from one year to the next, bearing alternately the names of Saint-Jean-de-Vergt, Vern or Vergt. The former commune of Sainte-Marie-de-Vergt merged with Vergt in 1824.
