A little history
Around 200 BC, the Pétrocores "inhabited the area situated between the Dordogne and the Vézère", according to Venceslas Kruta. During this period they settled on the heights on the left bank of the Isle and created, on the present-day territory of Coulounieix-Chamiers, an oppidum situated on the plateau de la Boissière, also known as the "camp de César à la Curade". This oppidum, perhaps the La Tène capital of the Pétrocores, was abandoned a few decades after the Caesarian Conquest, and the Gallo-Roman Vesunna, capital of a Roman civitas and future Périgueux, established itself on the opposite bank between 25 and 16 BC.
