Périgueux (prononcé) is a French commune situated in the Périgord, in the South-West of France, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is the most populous town in the Périgord. Chef-lieu and prefecture of the département of the Dordogne since 1791, the commune has 29,055 inhabitants as of 2023, with an aire d'attraction totalling 114,362 inhabitants in the same year.
A little history
Around 200 BC, "the Pétrocoriens inhabited the region situated between the Dordogne and the Vézère", according to Venceslas Kruta. During this period they settled on the heights on the left bank of the Isle and created, on the current territory of Coulounieix-Chamiers, a fortified camp at la Boissière, also known as the "camp de César à la Curade". The Pétrocores were in Gaule and not in Aquitaine, because before the Roman conquest these two territories were separated by the river Garumna, as Jules César wrote.
