Mussidan, the town
Mussidan covers 3.9 km², lies between 42 and 106 m above sea level and had 2,771 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Mussidan is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. From 1801 to 2015, the commune was the chef-lieu of the canton of Mussidan. Covering an area of 3.85 km2, it is the second smallest commune in the département, after Monpazier.
A little history
According to the livre noir de Saint Florent de Saumur, in 1081, Alguier, knight and lord of Mucidan [sic] gave to the monastery of Saint Florent de Saumur and to the priory of Montcarret the church of Saint Pierre de Sorziac. Shortly afterwards, he stripped the monks of Saint Florent of the said church in order to donate it to Fulcrade and to the religious community of Charroux.
