Bergerac, the town

Bergerac covers 56.1 km², lies between 12 and 146 m above sea level and had 27,110 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Bergerac is a French commune situated in the South-West of France, in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Listed as a ville d'art et d'histoire, it is the second largest town in the département by population, slightly less populous than the préfecture Périgueux. Chef-lieu of the arrondissement de Bergerac and centralising office of two cantons, Bergerac-1 and Bergerac-2, it is one of the three sous-préfectures of the département.

A little history

Bergerac is situated along the Dordogne and its development is historically linked to river transport. Indeed, rivers were for a long time, thanks to the gabares, the fastest and safest means of moving goods. On the downstream journey, the wine production of the region was transported towards Bordeaux and, on the upstream journey, various foodstuffs and building materials were carried using the towpaths. This activity was significant. For example, in the first half of 1859, 60,450 tonneaux of wine left for the Aquitaine capital from Bergerac, and 35,688 in the second half.
