A little history
The communal territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic period and then during the Gallo-Roman era. The town and its name are linked to the history of a man, Astérius, son of a Roman family, born in the 6th century at Puy-de-Pont, at the confluence of the Isle and the Salembre, near Neuvic sur l'Isle. Legend has it that, having become a hermit, he performed numerous miracles, giving the place a certain renown. After his death, his tomb attracting the devotion of the faithful, an abbey was built in the 8th century, around which a settlement was established.
