Vauréal covers 3.5 km², lies between 22 and 122 m above sea level and had 16,079 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Vauréalienne.
Vauréal is one of the thirteen communes of the communauté d'agglomération de Cergy-Pontoise, in the French département of Val-d'Oise. Created under the impetus of the State, the ville nouvelle de Cergy-Pontoise came into being in 1971 and marked the true starting point of the development of Vauréal. A small village of 800 inhabitants at the beginning of the 1980s, the commune counted 16,079 residents, known as Vauréaliens, at the last census of 2023.
A little history
The existence of a covered walkway on the territory of the commune attests to the presence of man as far back as the Neolithic period. Formerly, "Vauréal" bore the name "Lieu", from the Latin "Locus", as the parish, founded in 1252 for its large population of wine growers and attached to Jouy-le-Moutier, was situated 7 leagues from Paris. There is a letter dating from 1253 from Renaud de Corbeil, Bishop of Paris, which permits the construction of a baptismal church "in villa quae dicitur Locus", which had previously been part of the parish of Jouy, on condition that the cathedral chapter of Notre-Dame de Paris be paid the rights of synod and visitation and others as the curé of Jouy had done.
