A little history
Until the French Revolution, Varennes-Saint-Sauveur, a locality in the département of Saône-et-Loire falling since 1801 under the diocese of Autun, had been dependent on the diocese of Saint-Claude (established in 1742). In 1790, Buisserolles (or Busserolles), which is today a hamlet of Varennes, was at that time an independent commune attached to the département of l'Ain and to the canton of Saint-Trivier-de-Courtes, which had 843 inhabitants at the 1793 census. It obtained its attachment to Varennes-Saint-Sauveur on 24 December 1794. In 1793, Varennes-Saint-Sauveur, in the revolutionary context, changed its name and became Varennes-sur-Sevron.
