Tourves is a French commune situated in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its inhabitants are known as Tourvains.
A little history
Towards the end of the 3rd century and the beginning of the 2nd century before our era, a Celto-Ligurian oppidum situated on the hill of Candoux ("La costa du Gau", on which the chapelle Saint-Probace de Tourves stands) is thought to be at the origin of the commune of Tourves. Tourves then became one of the stopping points on the via Aurelia. In 1049, Pons, archbishop of Aix, consecrated the église Saint-Étienne at Tourves, and the surrounding territory, thereby establishing a sauveté which served as a place of refuge for the people living there. The death of Queen Jeanne Ire opened a succession crisis at the head of the county of Provence, with the towns of the Union d'Aix (1382-1387) supporting Charles de Duras against Duke Louis Ier d'Anjou.
