La Seyne-sur-Mer (pronounced locally [la ˈsɛjnə]) is a French commune situated on the Mediterranean coast in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It forms part of the métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée (TPM). Its inhabitants are called the Seynois, and locals traditionally pronounce this « seïnois ».
A little history
The name La Seyne derives from a reed that grew in this marshy area, at the far end of the bay that also borders Toulon. This plant was called the sagne, from which the name La Seyne originates. As is noted in the chapter on the commune's mayors, the hamlet of la Seyne formerly belonged to Six-Fours, the parent commune. It gained independence on 2 July 1657 under a royal decree issued by Louis XIV.
