Hyères (pronounced [ jɛʁ]) is a French commune situated in the département du Var, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The town marks the beginning of the Côte d'Azur (French riviera) and forms part of the protected area known as the Parc national de Port-Cros, the oldest marine park in Europe and in France (1963). Chef-lieu of two cantons, the town is situated on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea 16 km to the east of Toulon, at the mouth of the Gapeau.
A little history
The oldest monument in the town is without doubt the pierre à cupules, a slab of schist that is thought to have been engraved around 500–600 BC by the Greeks. It may represent constellations. It is in the 4th century BC.
