Six-Fours-les-Plages is a French commune situated on the shores of the Mediterranean in the département of Var, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It forms part of the métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée. Its territory, geographically privileged although subject to a strong mistral, is characterised by a large wooded area, steep relief to the south, islands, sandy beaches, numerous rocky coves and urban development concentrated along the coast and around the fort de Six-Fours.
A little history
Around 550 BC, the Greeks who had founded Marseille (Massalia) established on the hill overlooking the present-day Brusc the trading post of Tauroention, mentioned by Ptolemy and Strabo. Regularly threatened by the Ligurians from the interior, they consolidated their position by means of six fortified posts, each signalled by a fire, hence the name Six-Fours (in Latin furni, meaning ovens). Six Fors, the name of the town in the Middle Ages, was separated to the north from the community of Ollioules, with the river la Reppe flowing as far as its mouth near Saint-Nazaire, today known as Sanary.
