Thiviers, the town
Thiviers covers 27.8 km², lies between 147 and 303 m above sea level and had 2,876 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Thiviers is a commune situated in the south-west of France, in the département of Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. From 1790 to 2015, the commune was the chef-lieu of the canton de Thiviers, then in 2015 it became its bureau centralisateur. It is one of the six villes-portes of the parc naturel régional Périgord-Limousin.
A little history
The origins of Thiviers are very uncertain. It would appear that the etymology of its name is Celtic, derived from the words Tigernack, Tivernack, Tigern or indeed Tivern, which could mean Maison des chefs. The town was subsequently invaded in turn by the Romans, the Visigoths, the Arabs, and finally the Franks, which offers further possible explanations.
