Thenon covers 25.9 km², lies between 136 and 285 m above sea level and had 1,282 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Thenon is a French commune situated in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. From 1790 to 2015, the commune was the chief town of the canton de Thenon. Since 2015, it has been the centralising office of the canton du Haut-Périgord Noir.
A little history
Occupied since prehistoric times, the territory of the commune contains several Palaeolithic deposits. It was during the Gallo-Roman period that the town developed. Its etymology is thought to derive from this period. It appears that Teno originates from a Gallo-Roman personal name, Attienus or Attenus, accompanied by the suffix -onem.
