A little history
Before being called Stenay, the town long bore the name of Sathenay. The herald Vermandois, in his armorial from the years 1275–1285, mentions a knight named «Lermite de Sathenay», whose coat of arms is, palé d'argent et de gueules de 6 pièces … It is reputed to have been, from the 6th century onwards, the burial place of the Merovingian kings of Austrasia, notably Dagobert II, assassinated in 679 at Mouzay, near Stenay.
