A little history
The location where Commercy stands was occupied as far back as the early Palaeolithic period (côte de Bussy). The existence of the town is not attested before the 9th century. At a time when the court was itinerant, palaces were numerous. A centre of imperial fiscal administration, Commercy had a palace where the Carolingian emperor Louis le Pieux stopped around 830.
