A little history
An important drapers' fair was held there in 1409. Before 1790, there was a hospital and a Capuchin convent and the town had four gates and was surrounded by walls. A former chief town of a prévôté and a bailliage, Étain was subsequently chief town of a district from 1790 to 1795. The maîtrise particulière d'Estain had within its jurisdiction the grueries of Arrancy, Étain, Longuyon and Villers-la-Montagne.
