A little history
Bar-le-Duc is situated on a natural communication route used since prehistoric times. The valley of the Ornain was travelled by groups of hunter-gatherers during Prehistory. It is a few kilometres downstream from Bar-le-Duc, at Vassincourt, that the oldest archaeological site in the département was discovered, a campsite dating back 300,000 years (Lower and Middle Palaeolithic) with traces of a hearth and remains of hunted animals (horse, deer, aurochs, elephant, mammoth and woolly rhinoceros). The valley of the Ornain provides the link between two distinct geographical areas with complementary resources, the Champagne plain to the west and the Lorraine plateau to the east.
