A little history
At the beginning of the 12th century, the seigneury of Ligny was within the sphere of influence of the counts of Champagne. In 1155, through the marriage of Renaud II, comte de Bar, to Agnès de Champagne, it passed to the comté de Bar. Their grandson Henri II gave it as a dowry to his daughter Marguerite on the occasion of her marriage to Henri V, comte de Luxembourg, who in 1262 gave it to his second son Valéran, the founder of the house of Luxembourg-Ligny. In 1285, Valéran de Luxembourg, also known as Valéran de Ligny by Jacques Bretel in his poetic account of the Tournoi de Chauvency, was one of the principal heroes of those days of jousting and martial games.
