A little history
Montmédy, under the form Madiacum, is mentioned for the first time in 634. « Porcionem meam de Madiaco… cum mancipiis, aedificiis, vineis, campos, pratis, silvis, et prato sectum super Caro et Hogregia », it is thus that, in his will of 30 December 634, Adalgisel Grimo, a deacon of Verdun from a great aristocratic family, gave to the église Sainte-Agathe de Longuyon his properties at Montmédy and Iré, goods, buildings, vineyards, fields, meadows, woods, and a mowing meadow (?) on the banks of the Chièrs. Former capital of the comté de Chiny. The comte de Chiny erected a fortress there in 1220, the château de Mady, which would give its name to the town.
