Located in the causse de Martel, a natural area forming the most northerly of the four causses of Quercy, between the Limousin and the valleys of the Tourmente and the Dordogne, Souillac is a rural market town with 3,192 inhabitants in 2023. It is in the arrondissement de Gourdon and forms part of the communauté de communes Causses et Vallée de la Dordogne.
A little history
The Igue du Lion, or aven du Lion, was discovered in 1997 during motorway construction works. It yielded the skeleton of a cave lioness of less than two years of age, which had died on that spot shortly before the cavity became inaccessible, preserving the remains of the lion without any outside interference, not even from burrowing animals. The morphological characteristics of this animal place it close to the present-day species.
