Luzech, the town
Luzech covers 22.1 km², lies between 84 and 323 m above sea level and had 1,750 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Luzech (pronounced [lyzɛʃ] or [lyzɛk], Lusèg in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the south-west of the département of Lot in the Occitanie region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Lot and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage made up of four natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Luzech was already inhabited in prehistoric times, notably on the Pech de la Nène. Before the Roman conquest, the Gauls built an oppidum on the Impernal, naturally fortified by its steep character. Luzech was among the few sites in the Lot that were put forward as the location of the famous entrenched camp of Uxellodunum. The hypothesis, defended for a time by Napoléon III, who ultimately came round to the localisation at Puy d'Issolud, was still defended, with a certain degree of renown, by a local scholar, Émile Albouy, in 1957.
