Figeac covers 35.2 km², lies between 170 and 451 m above sea level and had 9,793 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Figeac is a French commune, a sub-prefecture of the Lot department, in the Occitanie region. It is situated to the east of the causse de Gramat, the largest and wildest of the four causses of Quercy. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Célé, the Drauzou, the ruisseau de Planioles and various small watercourses.
A little history
In 2008, surveys were carried out prior to the construction of the western bypass of Figeac. Near the lieu-dit Sabatié, at the current bridge of the D19 over the D802, archaeologists from the Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives uncovered remains of human occupation dating from the Middle Neolithic, the Early Bronze Age and the first Iron Age. This small settlement was located on a flat area close to the left bank of the Célé. It revealed fragments of ceramics and charcoal. Pits, post holes for a palisade and the remains of a timber-framed wall were also found, along with sherds from urns, vases, small cups, bowls and dishes, as well as beads and spindle whorls.
