Gourdon (in Occitan, Gordon, pronounced [ɡuɾ'du]) is a French commune situated in the north-west of the département of Lot, in the Occitanie region. It is also located in the Bouriane, a natural region of sandy, hilly terrain covered with forest, with chestnut trees as the principal species. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Céou, the Melve, the Bléou, the Marcillande, the ruisseau de Saint-Clair and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Thanks to the continuous presence of the civil administration in the same building on the place Saint-Pierre since the 13th century, the administrators of Gourdon have been able to preserve in the hôtel de ville an exceptional collection of municipal archives (in Occitan, Latin and Old French) that recount the history of their town since 1249. The rocky spur forming the butte de Gourdon contains a shelter and a cave occupied during the Magdalenian period. Polished stone axes were discovered some fifty years ago. The Gourdon region was already occupied by prehistoric humans of the Upper Palaeolithic some 25,000 years ago.
