The second largest town in the département and a sub-prefecture, it is known for the episode of the vase de Soissons following the capture of the town by Clovis in 486, from which it draws its nickname of « la cité du Vase ». Clovis also established his capital there until 508, after Tournai, and the town then served as the capital of several Merovingian kings.
