Serres covers 18.6 km², lies between 633 and 1,431 m above sea level and had 1,298 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Serres is a French commune situated in the département of Hautes-Alpes, in the région of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The commune is part of the parc naturel régional des Baronnies provençales created in 2015. Along with Callac (Côtes-d'Armor), Èze (Alpes-Maritimes), Laval (Mayenne), Noyon (Oise), Sarras (Ardèche), Savas (Ardèche), Senones (Vosges) and Sées (Orne), Serres is one of the rare French communes to bear a palindrome name.
A little history
Archaeological excavations have demonstrated the ancient occupation of the site by the Ligures. The testament of the patrician Abbon, dated 739, mentions for the first time the castrum on the Pignolette, which is the origin of the town. In 988, the cleric Richaud de Saint-André-de-Rosans gave to the abbey of Cluny all the territories and the fortified place of Serredum (Serres). The town would give its name to the whole surrounding area, the Serrois.
