Séméac, the town
Séméac covers 6.3 km², lies between 310 and 436 m above sea level and had 5,236 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Séméac is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Hautes-Pyrénées, in the Occitanie region. In historical and cultural terms, the commune lies within the former comté de Bigorre, a historic county of the French Pyrénées and Gascony. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Adour, the canal d'Alaric, the ruisseau de Layet and two other watercourses.
A little history
Although traces of occupation dating from the Palaeolithic and later from Antiquity have been found, the true history of Séméac goes back to the Middle Ages, when the seigneurie de Séméac emerged at the end of the Carolingian dynasty. Previously a possession of Tarbes, it was the result of an exchange in 1020 between the Duke of Sanche, Guillaume, prince and duke of Gascony, and Arnaud-Raymond de Bas or de Coarraze of a plot of land situated at Saint-Pé, which the former needed in order to build the Benedictine monastery. The existence of Séméac appears in texts as early as 1032. Later, the barons de Castelbajac dispossessed the Coarraze of this estate, which they retained for nearly three centuries.
