Savignac-les-Églises is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. From 1790 to 2015 the commune was the chief town of the canton of Savignac-les-Églises.
A little history
The communal territory has been occupied since the Mousterian period, as proven by the remains found in the abri de Pommier, on the banks of the Isle. The current church dedicated to saint Martin bears on its keystone above the choir a coat of arms displaying "d'azur à 3 cotices d'or au blason de Périgord brochant le tout" and the inscription surrounding it reads "Guy 1er Vicomte de Limoges père de Richard Abbé de Tourtoirac + MXXV +". Indeed, Richard was abbot of the abbaye Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens de Tourtoirac, which he is said to have founded during the 11th century. The church of Savignac was undoubtedly one of the first priories dependent on the abbey.
