Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois (pronounced [sɛ̃t̪ ʒǝnǝviɛv d̪ɛ bwa]) is a French commune situated twenty-four kilometres south of Paris in the département of l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Génovéfains.
A little history
It is certain that small houses were already scattered throughout the forest of Séquigny. The hamlet of Sicnii villare (a probable place of woodcutting and residence) existed during the time of Roman Gaul, as on the outskirts of present-day Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, near the Pont de la Fouille, a villa rustica was established, which disappeared during the Germanic invasions. During an epidemic in 448, sainte Geneviève performed a miracle by turning a spring into a source of miraculous water. This same sainte Geneviève is said to have defended the locality of Paris on two occasions in 451.
