Saint-Tropez (pronounced [sɛ̃ tʁɔ.pe]) is a French commune situated in the département of Var in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and is the chief town of the canton of Saint-Tropez. From the corsair town dominated by its 16th-century citadel to the fishing village of the early 20th century, the first town to be liberated during the Provence landings became, from the 1950s onwards, an internationally renowned seaside resort on the Var stretch of the Côte d'Azur, owing to the enthusiasm of artists of the Nouvelle Vague and then the yéyés, and ultimately a holiday retreat for the European and American jet set. Its inhabitants are known as Tropézien(ne)s.

A little history

In the peninsula of Saint-Tropez, the absence of caves or shelters does not appear to have been conducive to the settlement of Palaeolithic populations and has left only fleeting traces that are difficult to interpret. The Mesolithic period has provided no further information. The Neolithic period, however, and in particular the middle and late Neolithic, are represented by around fifteen sites. In Saint-Tropez itself, the sites of Capon and Salinettes have made it possible to unearth pottery sherds and flint objects including scrapers, blades, knives and arrowheads.
