Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle is a French commune situated in the département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, which borders Spain, forms part of the Basque province of Labourd and is known for its lake, the lac de Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, which has a leisure centre two kilometres from the old town centre.
A little history
Saint-Pée was for a long time nothing more than a religious and commercial centre, a meeting place reduced to its simplest form and placed under the patronage of Saint Pierre, amid a multitude of small mountain hamlets overlooking it from higher ground. In 1609, the château was entered by Pierre de Rosteguy de Lancre, who had been commissioned by the Parlement de Bordeaux to purge the land of all sorcerers and witches under the grip of demons. In 1790, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle became the chief town of a canton comprising the communes of Ahetze and Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, falling under the district of Ustaritz. It is one of the most active Basque communes during the French Revolution.
