A little history
Villa-Latta, a small Gallo-Roman town, which after the death of saint Maximin took his name, has owed its fame since the 13th century to the discovery of tombs attributed to saint Maximin and sainte Marie Madeleine. According to tradition, Marie Madeleine, after spending many long years of contemplation in her hermitage (the grotte de la Sainte-Baume), is said to have been buried in the crypt of saint Maximin. Baume is the Provençal equivalent of "grotte" (cave). The relics, hidden on 6 December 710 out of fear of the Saracens who were ravaging the region, were discovered in 1279 by the future Charles II d'Anjou, then prince de Salerne.
