A little history
By letters patent of March 1763, Saint-Martin became part, along with Diconne, of the marquisat de La Marche (at Villegaudin), created in favour of Claude-Philibert Fyot, 1st president of the Parlement de Dijon. In February 1944, a group of resistance fighters established themselves at the lieu-dit de la Madeleine, situated in the commune of Saint-Martin-en-Bresse. During the night of Wednesday 8 March 1944, a fierce battle broke out in the dead of night between the Maquis (Résistance) of the Louhans region and German troops. The hamlet was devastated and looted, leaving 8 victims among the ranks of the Résistance and the civilian population.
