Saint-Junien covers 56.8 km², lies between 157 and 317 m above sea level and had 11,415 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Saint-Junien is a commune in the centre-west of France situated in the département of Haute-Vienne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and the former historic province of Limousin. A chef-lieu de canton, it is bordered by the Vienne where that river, at the foot of the monts de Blond, emerges from its winding course through the Massif central. With 11,415 inhabitants at the last census of 2023, it is the second largest town in the département by population, after Limoges, even though it is not even a sous-préfecture, that status having been granted to the neighbouring towns of Rochechouart 9 km to the south, and Bellac 30 km to the north-east, both of which nevertheless have populations of around 4,000 inhabitants.
A little history
Saint-Junien does not appear to have been inhabited in prehistoric times. It is true that to the north as well as to the south of the town, dolmens and menhirs from the Neolithic period are relatively numerous, notably near the monts de Blond and in the area around Rochechouart where stone tools are also found. However, the deep forests and damp valleys did not offer favourable conditions for human settlement. This explains the absence of prehistoric remains at Saint-Junien, situated at the confluence of the Vienne and the Glane, two watercourses with steep-sided banks.
