Isle, the town
Isle covers 20.2 km², lies between 208 and 346 m above sea level and had 7,995 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Isle is a French commune situated in the south-west suburbs of Limoges, in the département of Haute-Vienne in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Isloises and the Islois. Isle is the 5th largest town in the département by number of inhabitants, after Limoges, Saint-Junien, Panazol and Couzeix.
A little history
Isle was an ecclesiastical seigneury belonging to the bishops of Limoges. The château des évêques, which stood next to the church, was demolished during the Revolution. The Limousin poet Jean Rebier, Majoral du Félibrige (1879–1966), lived on his property at the hamlet of Mas de l'Aurence. The writer Robert Margerit (1910–1988) lived on the property of Thias.
