Couzeix covers 30.7 km², lies between 260 and 440 m above sea level and had 10,195 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Couzeix (pronounced [kuzɛks]) is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Vienne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Couzeixois.
A little history
As far back as the 11th century, traces can be found of this prévôté established by the abbots of Saint-Martial in Limoges, around which a number of dwellings developed fairly quickly. Over the centuries following its establishment, the name changed several times, Coseis, Cozei, Cosaï, Coseium, Cozez, Couzeilz, before arriving at the current spelling towards the end of the 15th century. Already nicknamed "le petit Limoges" in the 13th century, this proximity and dependence earned it certain honours, as it was here that important figures were welcomed. The town thus saw King Charles VII and the Dauphin, the future Louis XI, stay for one night in 1438 before their entry into Limoges.
