Aixe-sur-Vienne is a French commune situated to the south-west of Limoges, in the département of Haute-Vienne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Chef-lieu of the canton of Aixe-sur-Vienne, it forms part of the communauté de communes du Val de Vienne. It is one of the six gateway towns of the parc naturel régional Périgord-Limousin.
A little history
The site of Aixe-sur-Vienne was occupied as early as the Gaulish period owing to the presence of a ford on the Vienne at the location of the current hamlet of Vienne, on the road running alongside the river and linking Aixe to Verneuil-sur-Vienne. The settlement was located at Tarn, on the first heights of the town, most likely at the site of the present-day cemetery. The Romans recognised the value of the site and built a bridge, now gone, not far from the Moulin de Tarn.
