Formerly a parish of the royal province of Dauphiné and former seat of the communauté de communes of the Saint-Jeannaise region, the commune has been a member since 2014 of the communauté de communes Bièvre Isère. Its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Jeannais.
A little history
The current area of Saint-Jean-de-Bournay lies to the west of the ancient territory of the Allobroges, a group of Gaulish tribes occupying the former Savoie, as well as the part of Dauphiné situated to the north of the river Isère. Situated close to Vienne, the Gallo-Roman capital, Saint-Jean-de-Bournay, known at the time as Castrum Sancti Johannis and remaining so until the 12th century, lay on one of the principal military and commercial routes linking Rome to the Rhodanian provinces via the Alps.
