Saint-Ismier is a French commune situated around a dozen kilometres to the north-east of Grenoble in the département of Isère, in the région of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is attached to the arrondissement of Grenoble, to the canton du Moyen Grésivaudan and to the communauté de communes Le Grésivaudan. This small town has seen its population grow to 7,000 inhabitants and its land urbanised during the second half of the 20th century, but it still retains significant scattered rural, agricultural and forested areas.
A little history
From the 4th millennium BC, the progressive cultivation of the land on the slopes of the Grésivaudan and the Combe de Savoie by Neolithic farmers has been established through archaeological research. The first residents of the Saint-Ismier area to be historically recognised are the Allobroges, who settled there from the 5th century BC. This people occupied the largest zone stretching from the north of the Vercors and Belledonne through the Grésivaudan and across a large part of the region that would later be called the Sapaudia, then the Sabaudia, which would become la Savoie.
