Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil (pronounced [sɛ̃ ʒɛʁmɛ̃ lɛ kɔʁbɛj]) is a French commune situated twenty-nine kilometres south-east of Paris in the département of l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. It is the chief town of the canton of Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil. Its inhabitants are called the Saint-Germinois.
A little history
The territory of the commune was occupied as early as the Neolithic period, as attested by the discovery in 1906 of the allée couverte des Champs-Dolents, since destroyed. The first known château dates from 1312 and was built by Geoffroy Coquatrix, a wealthy and prominent bourgeois of Paris and cup-bearer to King Philippe-le-bel. The château underwent several repairs and alterations over the decades until its destruction in 1590. Indeed, during the Wars of Religion, at the time of the siege of Corbeil, Alexandre Farnèse, duc de Parme, occupied the château and, upon withdrawing, burned it down...
