Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine is a French commune situated in the département of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. A parish of the former province of Dauphiné, the village is positioned in the natural region of the Terres froides and attached to the communauté d'agglomération of the Pays voironnais. Its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Geoiriens.
A little history
In the 12th century, construction began on the église de Saint-Geoire, a masterpiece that is today listed and recently restored. From the 14th century onwards, the history of the Valdaine has been linked to the existence of the château de Longpra, situated above Saint-Geoire. The château de Longpra has belonged to the same family since 1536. It is today inhabited by the comtesse de Franclieu, whose husband, descended from the owning family, was mayor of Saint-Geoire from 2001 to 2007. The moat and the drawbridge that provides access to the château bear witness to what the maison forte de Longpra was in the Middle Ages. It was an austere and well-defended residence.
