The seat of the communauté de communes du Pays de Bièvre-Liers until 2014, Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs is now the seat of a larger community called the communauté de communes Bièvre Isère. The territory of the commune is home to the aéroport de Grenoble-Alpes-Isère, formerly known as Grenoble-Saint-Geoirs, which serves the city of Grenoble and numerous winter sports resorts.
A little history
In the early days of Antiquity, the territory of the Allobroges extended over the greater part of the lands that would later be named the Sapaudia (this "pays des sapins" would become Savoie) and to the north of the Isère. The Allobroges, like many other Gaulish peoples, were a confederation. In fact, the Romans gave, for convenience, the name of Allobroges to all the Gaulish peoples living in the civitate (city) of Vienne, to the west and south of the Sapaudia. The birthplace of the famous smuggler of the Ancien Régime (18th century) Louis Mandrin, son of François-Antoine Mandrin, a merchant trader, is situated in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs.
